The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined direction.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Key Recruitment

The news follows a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete message from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the input to mind and revamped the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our audience.

The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all excited to keep observing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Then, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and challenges that shift every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."

The game has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can expect additional details as production advances.
